Too Many Puppies

If I were one of those avid bloggers who categorizes posts, this post would be filed under the "not at all related" category. Or maybe the "strange coincidence" category. Which brings my to my next point (although I never really had a first point): why do bloggers spend time categorizing posts? Does anyone ever actually click on a category? I, for one, have never clicked on a blog post category. If I ever did click on a category, it would be on Dug's "toilet/bathroom" category. Wait a minute, I just checked and Dug doesn't even have a "toilet/bathroom" category, which reaffirms my belief that blog post categories are useless.

... but I digress (assuming it's possible to digress without ever being on point in the first place)...

Earlier this morning, I read the following piece of Barbie literature with my daughter:
I've always gotten a good chuckle out of the name of this book, for reasons that will become apparent in a moment (unless it is already apparent to you, in which case you are awesome).

Immediately after reading this fine piece of literature with my daughter, I hopped in the car and started listening to one of the local high school radio stations. An utterly forgettable song finished, and the next song began:

Seriously, what are the odds of that happening? This is a song that's probably been played on the radio, what 3 times in history? (it's not exactly radio friendly) I read "Too Many Puppies" with my daughter, and 5 minutes later "Too Many Puppies" is playing on the radio. You know it's going to be a good day when coincidences like that happen.

While we're on the topic, they're going to be in town in August. Primus I mean, not Barbie.

On my blog, I've used the categories several times. But I agree, I doubt many visitors have used them.

good to know there are other KOHS listeners out there!

KOHS is amazing, sometimes. Once in a while the kid with the trench coat and the greasy hair takes control and plays some real crap. (At least, that's how I always envision whoever plays that garbage...)

And I love that song. One of my favorite concerts was Primus at Saltair. 1995?

Categories/tags are not so much about organization, as they are about SEO, back links, and all that sort of stuff. I find them most useful on blogs like say... Mashable, that cover a lot of different topics. They can be a decent way of tracking down old posts as well.

And now, I'm going to bed. Singing "Too many puppies... with gun in their hands..."

Holy crap, that's actually a children's book. I saw the post an immediately (and only) thought of primus. Awesome.

Actually not KOHS. It was on KPGR (88.1 - Pleasant Grove High School). Between KPGR, KOHS, and KRCL (90.9), you can almost always find a good tune, and never have to listen to a commercial (since none of these stations have commercials). I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing, but you trade off the typical obnoxious announcers for overtly sophisticated/liberal announcers (in the case of KRCL) or flighty teenager announcers (for KOHS and KPGR).

So, I just checked and Primus' "Too Many Puppies" came out in 1990. The Barbie version, written by Lisa Trusiani Parker, came out in 1996. You can't tell me that Lisa wasn't a closet Primus fan.

So, categories. Yeah, I use ‘em, for 2 reasons. First, different people read my blog for different stuff. Some just for biking, some just for plants, some just for birds. So they can check out stuff by categories and blow off stuff they don’t care about. Second is in case I ever want to re-use some/all of the content. For what I don’t know. But say I wanted to write a Wasatch wildflower guide or something- it’d make it easier to break out the relevant content.

Great, I've offended the pro bloggers. I guess that's why they say "don't blog about blogging." The only reason for my rambling is certainly because I have no content worth searching for. You guys actually have posts that people may want to dig up someday. If I were to recommend categories for Watcher, they would be "Utah Cultural Commentary" and "Family Crap", since Watcher always has interesting and entertaining insights on both (and the Family stuff is quite a bit better than "Crap").

Griz,

Was that the show that the crowd boo'd Mike Watt (opening act) and Primus ripped into the crowd for not knowing who they were boo'ing?
